PSP Beats Wii Sales For Second Week In Japan 1/14/08

Market research firm Media Create has revealed data for weekly hardware sales in Japan for the week ending January 6th, following details of the software top thirty.

In the last major week of sales in the Japanese winter/New Year gift giving season, all formats have seen a rise in sales, with the Nintendo DS leading the pack with a jump of over 47,000 units to 266,568.

For the second week running, the PSP has outsold the Wii, with a rise in demand of almost 57,000 units to 218,234. With only three titles in the top fifty (at numbers fourteen, sixteen and forty), the hardware sales once again appear to be completely independent to the format’s limited software success.

The PSP’s success is all the more notable given the record six Wii titles in the software top ten this week. Despite this, and an over 55,000 unit increase in sales, Nintendo’s home format was still left in third place.

PlayStation 3 sales rose by over 11,000 units to 64,183, while the PlayStation 2 increased by over 6,000 units to 32,010. The Xbox 360 also saw an improvement on the previous week, but only by around 1,500 units for a total of 9,763.
