Can Video games surpass Movies in Storytelling ?

A few days ago, Star Ocean 4 designer Yoshinori Yamagishi ranted on about how video game storytelling could exceed books or film. Yesterday, it's Mad Max director George Miller. According to the filmmaker, "Games were the poor cousin to feature films when it came to storytelling but I think it's flipping. Games allow you be much more like a novelist." George Miller is currently teaming up with God of War II director Cory Barlog to make a Mad Max game.

Miller continues, "I'm curious how much you can engage with the characters through the game-play," "It's the opportunity to make a novel." George Miller has a great point with a few games this generation merging the power of storytelling and great graphics, with such games being Bioshock and Heavenly Sword.

Star Ocean 4 producer game developer Yoshinori Yamagishi thinks game storytelling can eventually superseded other mediums. According to Yoshinori, "But in a game developer's case we always have to think about how players might react to each depiction of a character or storyline, and that's the part we can't predict," Yamagishi continues. "Nevertheless we have to make these predictions to a certain degree, and incorporate this into our work." He adds that this is more of a challenge.

"But if we manage to get over this hurdle," Yamagishi says, "then I regard video games as a greater medium to provide people with deep emotional and exciting experiences."

Bioshock with it's great twist at the end has shown developers that an engaging spellbinding tale can be woven for a console if done right. Heavenly Sword for Sony PS3 also prove you can have complex acting in a game to drive it's story while merging advance graphics. Killzone 2 has used advance graphic and sound as a weapon of immersion. Video games is currently in it's infancy and has unlimited possibilities for growth and advancements, as technology evolves at the current pace Video Games one day will surpass movies and other mediums in it's ability to tell a story and engage it's audience.

Video Games sales KO DVD/Blu-ray sales in 2008

Video Games outpaced DVD/Blu-ray sales for the first time on a global scale in 2008. According to, Media Control GfK international game sales grew 20% in 2008, to $32 billion. Combined DVD/Blu-ray sales fell 6%, to $29 billion. You can very well bet "your left whatever" that Nintendo had a great hand in the pawange of DVD/Blu-ray.

GfK is also reporting, that game software will grow to 12% this year, to about $36 billion, while DVD and Blu-ray combined will decline another 4%. I will have to say looking at Sony's list of exclusives in 2009 and the cash machine they called the "Wii". It only makes sense that software sales will grow in 2009.

Even though Blu-ray sales may seem like it may be suffering. Blu-ray sales will more than double in 2009 hitting $2.9 billion, according to GkK.

5 Things Sony and RockStar can do to make GTA IV Better

I was sitting playing GTA IV last night and I began to think............ GTA IV on Sony PS3 could be greatly enhance with some very cool firmware updates. Sony may be able to do some pretty cool stuff with GTA IV without the need for exclusive episodic content.

This is my wish list of cool shit I would like to see happen with future firmware updates of GTA IV or maybe in GTA V.

  1. Use YouTube to upload my own videos to watch on any of the television at the safe houses.
  2. Internet radio. I would like the ability to listen any radio station online while I am joy riding around Liberty City. I want the ability to listen to Boston vs the Yankees on ESPN radio as I ride to meet up with Little Jacob to do a job.
  3. This will probably make its way to the PSN: New cars, weapons, boats, planes, jets, just new individual content. I want the option to get a chainsaw ala GOW/RE4 and go on a rampage. I want to fly a Russian MIG through the skies of Liberty City while firing rockets at hapless LCPD.
  4. This may be a little far fetch, I would love to have the ability to create my own boroughs. Maybe use LittleBigPlanet engine to create your very own piece of Liberty City and you and your friends go and cause havoc together online.
  5. A seasonal or weather engine not just rain. What if the seasons change in GTA IV? For example as spring arrives you see more birds and foliage around the area becomes more prevalent, summertime you would see heat waves raising form parked cars and the populous would wear less clothes, Fall will bring the gradual charge in colors of the leaves and finally winter will bring snow in GTA IV. How can you be in Liberty City and there be no Snow?
Who needs exclusive episodic content when you have firmware updates. The next GTA will be develop for the Sony PS3 as the lead platform and RockStar will be able to further push their vision in a more spectacular manner.

Sony PS3 to Get GTA IV downloadable Content Maybe!

Money talks and bullshit walks. Microsoft has paid $50 millions dollars to Rockstar to delay the inevitable release of downloadable content for GTA IV for Sony PS3.

I would think it is foolish to assume that a game that originated on the Sony PS1 and help shape the continue success of Rockstar will never get love on the Sony PS3.

Speaking to Videogamer.com, SCEE head David Reeves said that PS3 owners will probably see GTA IV content eventually.

At this current moment Sony has outpaced Microsoft Xbox360 in sales in all regions in 2008. As the install base for Sony PS3 continues to grow at the current pace. It will be very lucrative for Rockstar to release GTA IV pay to play content for Sony PS3.

Oxford University to profit from GTA IV

GTA IV is officially mainstream with NY Times,Washington Post and about every major newspaper covering arguably one of the most anticipated games in history surpassing the half ass efforts of Halo 3.

Two students Torsten Reil and Colm Massey used research undertaken at Oxford’s Zoology department into human and animal movement to create the Euphoria game engine. The Euphoria game engine is used to created the unparalleled animation throughout liberty city.

Reil and Massey have developed a game engine which eliminates the need for pre-set animations, replacing them with real-time simulations that create more interactive characters. Reil and Massey team up with a university transfer company named Isis Innovation which is a spin off of Oxford University. Isis Innovation companies has a total value of 2 billion euro.

Who can say that Video Games do not teach you anything.

Nano Comparison: GTA IV Sony PS3 vs GTA IV Xbox 360

GTA IV Comparison Opinion

GTA IV has to be a game that if you have Attention Deficit Association it should not be played. I have only completed about the four missions so far. And the number one reason for about 7 hours of game play and only four mission completed there is a shit load off things to do. You can drive endlessly around for hours just listening to the radio being easily impress by the jaw dropping virtual representation on NY city.

GTA IV is a audio tour de france accompanied with a little eye candy for good measures. I have been playing GTA IV for mostly the Sony PS3. I went to blockbuster to rent GTA IV for my Xbox 360 yesterday to see why there is a perception that the Xbox360 is the better version.

My Xbox 360 is currently about three years old and my Sony PS3 is about 2 years old. For the first year of my PS3 life I only played demos never purchased one game. In that year I played almost every game for Xbox 360 or every game worth playing. That changed Christmas eve 2007 when COD 4 and Folklore arrived. Yesterday was the first time since Christmas Eve 2007 I played my Xbox360 and it felt a little wired.

Verdict: I prefer Sony PS3 version of GTA IV over its Xbox 360 counter part. Here is my List
  1. I truly respect and appreciate Xbox Live it has change the way all gamer socialize in an game console environment but and this is a strong BUT......if you Like to play GTA IV online and you have to decide which system to buy it for. You will have to consider with Microsoft Xbob360 you will have to pay $59.99 plus tax plus Xbox 360 Live subscription which range from $7.95 per month to $49.99 per year. The Sony PS3 is FREE to play with a friend online.
  2. If you did not hear the Sony PS3 is the best HD audio device on the market. The audio quality of GTA IV for both the Sony PS3 and Microsoft 360 are very similar. The audio seems a little more crisp on the PS3 versus Xbox 360 GTA IV. For the most part the sound quailty for both version are great.
  3. Graphics I will give the edge to Sony PS3 GTA IV. Games such as:Ratchet and Clank tools of destruction, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Folklore and even GTA IV has a distinct Sony PS3 look to it. I call it the Next Generation look. The best way I can explain it as the warm color setting on some TV sets or Photoshop editing tools. This look is somewhat evident in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots trailer videos and also Killzone 2. GTA IV feels graphically natural on the Sony PS3 if that makes sense. There is no overwhelming difference between GTA IV graphic for the Sony PS3 and the Microsoft 360. If you like action and adventure movies on IMAX then I recommend the Sony PS3 version it will satisfy every natural human senses. If you tend to lean towards digital screen and IMAX gives you a headache because of the sensory overload get Xbox360 version of GTA IV.
  4. Reliability and noise has not been an issue yet with Sony PS3. When I play GTA IV I have to play it at night when the family is sleep or when they are not here. When you play at night with the Xbox360 the noise that is emitted from the Xbox360 is pretty annoying it sounds like a old air conditioning unit in a Brooklyn brownstone. The Sony PS3 will make your night time GTA IV playing time a little more enjoyable.
  5. Reliability is a known issue with Xbox360 my younger brother had RROD and my very good friend's brother had RROD. That same good friend cannot play Madden 2007 anymore on his 360 it would keep freezing and not allow him to play online. My Xbox360 DVD tray has a mind of its own. It took about 10 minutes for GTA IV to install on my Sony PS3 but it also took about 5 minutes for me to try to get my DVD tray open so I can play GTA IV for my Xbox360.

Bottom line: If you have not bought a New Console yet and you were waiting for GTA IV before you make your purchase. I highly recommend you go with the Sony PS3 besides, Blu-ray, Free Online, the best HD audio devise, PSP connectivity, and the best one year game line up in the history of console games it is a no brainer.

GTA IV on Sony PS3: Resolution, Online Issues Hamper Experience

Sony PS3 GTA IV Issue Myth, BS or warranted.

I have not had any issues yet. I have only played 20-30 minutes so far. I ventured online for one second and that was it. My current Sony SKU is a launch day 20gig with an upgrade 160gig HD. So far with a little tweaking to the display setting GTA IV is one of the most impressive games I have played to date.

When it isn't locking up your system with inexcusable game-ending glitches, Grand Theft Auto IV, for all intents and purposes, has delivered as advertised.

That is, if you're playing the Xbox 360 version.

Confirmed reports today put two additional issues at the feet of the PS3 version of GTA IV. These issues include inaccessible online play and a less-than-true-HD 640p resolution.

Sony is aware of the online problems, read a post over at Kotaku, but Rockstar so far has not responded to their inquiries. The GTA IV servers are hosted by Gamespy.

As for the resolution issue, several outlets have confirmed the PS3 version runs at 640p, compared to the Xbox 360's HD 720p. Before you go stringing up Sony and Rockstar for the gaff, however, remember that Halo 3 experienced the same un-HD treatment when it launched in 2007.

It should also be noted that neither version runs at 1080p, the resolution most touted by both Microsoft and Sony in the run up to the "next generation console war." Maybe GTA IV could come out for Wii after all?

Nano Interpretation
Bullshit
(often abbreviated BS), also Bullcrap, is a common English expletive. It can also be shortened to just "Bull".

Most commonly, it describes incorrect, misleading, or false language and statements. Literally, it describes the feces of a bull. As with many expletives, it can be used as an interjection (or in many other parts of speech) and can carry a wide variety of meanings.

Top ten things you can Do while GTA IV Installs unto your PS3

The world has a few things out there that can cause many countries to beat their war drums: Lies, Treason, Chemical or Biological attack, Building a Nuclear plant when the world do not want you too, and etc. Will at 12am Tuesday morning a war has quietly and fiercely begun and the culprit GTA IV.

--Get your Flame retarded suit on because with the recent release of GTA IV for Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox360 every fanboy dream will become a reality with the web distorting the perception that the PS3 version of GTA IV is inferior to Xbox 360 . For the record I am currently playing GTA IV for the Sony PS3 at the moment and it is a perfect ten.

--One thing that Sony need to fix with the PS3 is the Install time. Before you can start the game it will take about 10 full minutes before you can get your Grand Theft on. I have came up with a list of the 10 top things you can do when you are waiting for GTA IV to install unto your Sony PS3 HD

  1. Absolutely nothing because no pop-ups and load times is priceless
  2. Play Xbox 360 version of GTA IV while you wait
  3. Have sex with your mate-some of you can pull this off in ten minutes I know I can.
  4. Play a drinking Game and get drunk in real life and in the Game make MADD proud
  5. Do some drugs a little crack, a little crystal meth,LSD,PCP,DIP, or brown brown
  6. Get a call girl or Hooker get your Grand Theft on before you even start playing
  7. Start a Blog about how long it took you to start playing GTA IV
  8. Play COD4 naked
  9. Start to learn the Cherokee Indian language called Iroquoian
  10. You can learn the ancient art of Ebonics

Sony PS3 GTA IV Eye Candy that you can Play

Will be renting GTA IV Xbox360 today just to compare.

-When I originally inserted GTA IV into my PS3 on Tuesday night at about 11pm I was a little excited......actually I was very excited.

-Note it took a total of 7 minutes to install on HD not too bad there is a few thing I can do in the mean time.

-Took a total of about 9 1/2 minutes before the actual start of the game. The TV that I am currently using is a Samsung CRT 35" HDTV 1080i HDMI connection. I played GTA IV for about 10 minutes driving around getting a feel for the game.

-In the first ten minutes I was in awe with the graphics and was pretty disappointed all at the same time. I began to wonder why does GTA look like this like it was missing something.

-Yesterday I came home form work at about 11:45pm I decide lets get a little GTA before bed.... started the game I was little bother by the way it look. It you press start there is an option for game settings . If you scroll to the right to Display Setting and hit X on the PS3 control pad you have the option to change the Contrast, Brightness and Effects or FX(I am not really sure at work right now) I change my Contrast by about 15% and brightness about 15% and left the third option on default.

--After this was done I would have to say GTA IV is one pretty SOB. The Minor adjustment to the Display settings did wonders to how the game looked on my TV. For 20 more minutes all I did was drive around and cause a little havoc licking my eyeballs.......GTA is one of the prettiest games on Sony PS3 100% Eye Candy. I have not played 360 GTA but will be playing it tonight to see if there is a difference.

--Bottom line I will be a little skeptical about the comparison videos. Where these videos shoot at default display settings? What type of TV was used? I would recommend that if you have Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox360 rent each game first then make the decision. If you rent both games than buy the one you feel its the best. The total cost of renting both Sony PS3 and Microsoft GTA IV will be $77.97 without tax.

--I would Highly recommend the Sony PS3 version for a few reasons:
  • Free online****Priceless
  • No pop ups at all. Please note I played a grad total of 20 minutes or so. During my play time I was truly impress by the scope of the City and attention to detail.
  • It Free to play online--oops repeat...
  • DLC will come to Sony PS3 reason being C.R.E.A.M(cash rules everything around me) By the end of this year PS3 should have an install base as large as or larger than Xbox 360 and money is everything you do not spend $100 million dollars to limit your maximum return on investment it is pretty stupid to think Sony PS3 will get no DLC.
  • Sisaxis support will allow you to operate certain vehicles with motion control. I am not the biggest fan of Sixaxis only if it implemented right(best game with Sixaxis done right FolkLore).
  • Blu-ray....Disc hey you can say that you have a Blu-ray Library

GTA 4's Production Budget Estimated at $100M

Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies revealed in an interview that the recently released Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) had a budget of roughly $100 million, marking the title as the most costly development of any game to date.

GTA IV's massive budget pins the title above the previous front-runner Shenmue, released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and costing an unprecedented $70 million to produce.

"It's like making a theatre production, a few movies and an album all to fit into one package," Benzies told the Times Online.

Benzies also noted that about 1,000 people pitched in on the game's development. Beyond the expected tasks of programming and design, Rockstar also set up time-lapse cameras on New York rooftops to capture the correct intensity of the rain, and took over 100,000 photographs on location to piece together Liberty City.

"We're constantly competing against ourselves," says Benzies. "If something isn't exactly right, it comes out of the game or gets fixed."

Online Impression of Sony PS3 GTA IV

GTA IV is richer, deeper and more involving than its predecessors. By the time the story threads start to tie up, the mission trees shake out, you're totally invested in the characters and their world. I'm actually jealous of everyone about to experience it for the first time. The greatest testament to GTA IV's brilliance is that I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since putting the pad down. [May 2008, p.88]

I could go on and on about why Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games we've ever seen and why even folks who are easily offended should play it, but that would be pointless. The only thing you need to know is that you have to play this game. Period.

Expectations were so high for Grand Theft Auto IV that one of the biggest surprises is that it's managed to meet them. That it's also gone on to confound these is truly a marvel, and the game's Liberty City is nothing less than one of the greatest videogame worlds yet conceived.

The light cast across the spectacuarly detailed facades, the slick road affecting car handling and causing footsteps to kick up splashes, the imposing skyscrapers, the flashing neon, it all changes with each passing street, and weather system...That's what you'll take away from GTA IV, along with the multiplayer gift that will keep on giving. [June 2008, p.36]

None of these little flaws take away from Liberty City's breathtaking vistas, incredibly varied scenery, and lived-in look (the PS3 version has the slightest visual edge, plus motion-control support -- but then it's missing Achievements and the eventual downloadable episodes exclusive to the 360 game). The city just feels alive.

It's not flawless, and it probably won't change your life, but GTA IV is an absolutely amazing piece of entertainment. It does things that no other game does, it's immersive in ways that no other game is and it's one of the biggest, wildest, most enjoyable games we've ever played.

Although its got plenty of excellent features, it's ultimately the storytelling that makes it an instant classic, a game unlike any we've played before. As is the case with many great books and movies, you'll want to know what happens to the characters after the game ends, and one can't help hoping that all of their American Dreams comes true.

I now know how film critics felt after screening "The Godfather." It's been days since Grand Theft Auto IV's credits rolled, yet I can?t seem to construct a coherent thought without my mind wandering off into a daydream about the game. I just want to drop everything in my life so I can play it again. Experience it again. Live it again...Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't just raise the bar for the storied franchise; it completely changes the landscape of gaming.

  • GameTrailers 98
Grand Theft Auto IV is the sex, drugs, and rock and roll of video games. It's a little less brave and intimidating this time around, but it?s also the most refined and polished game in the franchise?s history. This kind of sheen is generally reserved for titles with a much smaller scope.

In the GTA series, the weakest part of the gameplay has almost always been whenever the protagonist is on foot. GTA4 is no exception, though it?s still leagues better than previous titles...These gripes are minuscule in comparison to the huge, nearly-limitless possibilities granted by the scope of the game. The GTA series has redefined and raised the bar for sandbox gameplay - again.

It's A Hell Of A Story:
Niko's life in Liberty City is violent, tragic and enthralling. Rockstar North's ability to make the player emotionally invest in GTA IV's characters is a rare achievement—and this is one aspect of the game that the team came close to perfecting. Outside of a handful of either slightly annoying or forgettable cast members, GTA IV's supporting players are as much of a draw as firing RPGs at a car filled with Russian gangsters then fleeing from the LCPD at high speeds in a Turismo.

You Belong To The City: The level of detail packed in to every aspect of Liberty City's boroughs is simply astounding. On a micro level, seeing the neighborhood change from industrial to residential, from posh to sketchy, is impressive. Taking a macro perspective of whole islands during a leisurely helicopter flight can be awe-inspiring.

Some Characters And Plot Threads Fall Flat: One of the characters, who is intended to have an impact on the later portion of the game, is hard to care about on the level that Rockstar asks of the player. Some of the end-game relationships simply don't carry the same weight of those established in the first half, making it hard to be invested in some of the drama and can ultimately make one of the final chapters feel forced.

Some Missions Are Maddening: Of the 155 missions I attempted, 64 ended in failure. That's fine, but some seem impossible on the first attempt and others come close to resulting in thrown controllers. Missions are quick to restart, but by your third or fourth attempt of The Snow Storm, you may be looking for a Rockstar dev online to kill. There's not much in the way of mission filler, but some jobs are definitely more memorable than others.
