What is Sony planning for firmware update 3.0?

First off, I would like to state I have no clue what Sony will be planning for the big "firmware update 3.0" but it would be interesting to let the speculation begin. I have been pondering this for a minute and it's an interesting position Sony could be in to make some game changing moves.

If you think about it, firmware update 3.0 in theory should be Sony's most defining evolution in it's hardware lifespan. Could be see 3D upgrade to watch Blu-ray movies in 3D a precursor to 3D games? As the economy continues it's rapid spiral towards "financial doomsday" Sony is feeling the pinch. Even though Blu-ray sales are doing good and Sony PS3 sales are still on a steady pace upwards, the PS3 gets it's ass kicked by the mainstream media and fanboies on a daily basis.

Going from King to pauper can be somewhat traumatic and sometimes tragic. Sony has to do something spectacular to garner some "ohhhs", "ahhhhhs" and most importantly increase interest in their brand. With KillZone2 right around the corner, and some great multi platform games within spitting distance 2009 looks like the year to unleash the beast with "firmware 3.0"
3.0 may arrive sometime this Fall of 2009 alongside the killer exclusive game lineup. I would love to see more game centric features added as part of firmware update 3.0, such as

-cross chat with friends.

-access the Internet browser while in game.

-PIP play game and or watch blu-ray at the same time.

-Customizable PSN interface. ie: make it easier to change icons, change start up sound form chime to your own music.

-Use my content on HDD or the PS3 Eyetoy to customize my PSN user icon.

-I will like to see a revamp PSN. Maybe integrated PSN into HOME ie: start your PS3 and it will greet you and you can also use your avatar to interact with start up menu.

-Access to any PS3 feature while in game without having to quit game.

-In game video chat using PIP

-Ability to play all video codec

-A better Adobe flash so I can listen to ESPN radio on my PS3

-Minority Report style interface with PSN start up menu.

No one knows for sure what Sony has planned for firmware update 3.0. There will be a great flood of hype and speculation about Sony's plans with "3.0". I'll have to say it will be interesting to see what Sony will do? Would they make a big deal out of 3.0 as a gaming changing aspect for the industry and the masses? Or would Sony do absolutely nothing and firmware 3.0 would just be released to help with the stability of the PS3. I believe there will be something game changing when firmware 3.0 is introduce how gaming changing only time and Sony will tell. What are your thoughts?

-cross chat with friends.
Agreed

-access the Internet browser while in game.
No, that's stupid. That would take too much resources from games.

-PIP play game and or watch blu-ray at the same time.

We have that already, make your own theme

No.

-Access to any PS3 feature while in game without having to quit game.
No, some we don't have access to cause they take too much resources from games. We don't need to watch videos in-game for example

-In game video chat using PIP
Sure

-Ability to play all video codec
Not possible, there are millions of codecs.
You should ask for specific ones, and some more container support (like MKV)

-A better Adobe flash so I can listen to ESPN radio on my PS3
We have the highest version of flash available.

-Minority Report style interface with PSN start up menu.
It's called the XMB

"It's called the XMB"

I have a 360 and it's not close..to Minority Report, I would like to see the use of hand gestures to interact with your start up menu.

A better Adobe flash so I can listen to ESPN radio on my PS3
"We have the highest version of flash available."

Yes we do have the highest version of flash, but I still cannot go to ESPN radio? There is no excuse I cannot rad certain cities newspaper or even watch certain videos. I want Sony to make better use of flash..I want to go ESPN radio click listen and be able to hear...I was able to listen to ESPN radio before now I cannot.

Ability to play all video codec
Not possible, there are millions of codecs.
"You should ask for specific ones, and some more container support (like MKV)"

Yeah I understand...I would write about my constant inability to stream certain video files on PS3 and the ease on 360..why is it so different?

Access to any PS3 feature while in game without having to quit game.

Why not, if I want to play COD:WAW and the wife wanted to watch Desperate Housewives in HD, unfortunately I only have one HD TV in my home with no PIP. Blu-ray has PIP encoded so why not give me the option to play my game and my wife the option to watch her show in HD I believe it can be a great convenience feature for many.

access the Internet browser while in game.
"No, that's stupid. That would take too much resources from games."

It's not stupid because you can access the internet browser form Folklore and it's the only game I have seen so far that has done it. ie: You are playing a game for months and you are stuck why not hit the PS button while in game go to the internet browser and go to GameFAQs while your game is on pause and find a way to get unstuck. Or you are playing COD4 you get the munchies want some pizza why not pause my game get on the internet while my game is pause order some pizza from papa johns...

Customizable PSN interface. ie: make it easier to change icons, change start up sound form chime to your own music.
"We have that already, make your own theme"

I totally agree with you. making your own theme is one of the most tedious act of bullshit, make it a little easier so the masses can see the value? Make it known, not too many people know about this feature or care to go through the work to make it happen.

PIP play game and or watch blu-ray at the same time.
"No, that's stupid. That would take too much resources from games."

Why is it not, everyone in the states do not have multiple HD TV in their home most people also do not have PIP. Why not have the option to run a movie in a customizable screen so your company can watch a great HD movies and be entertain with games all at the same time?

-I will like to see a revamp PSN. Maybe integrated PSN into HOME ie: start your PS3 and it will greet you and you can also use your avatar to interact with start up menu.
"No."

Sony needs to do something more creative and dynamic with HOME s of right now my opinion of HOME is not too great I am extremely disappointed but shit it's still a Beta...

Thanks a lot for stopping by and responding to my fantasy firmware update 3.0 list...

I agree with the first dude, although i'd really like to see PIP video chat, as was shown with the ye toy commercial. Leaving video messages for people instead of text would be amazing! Full 3d integration will probably happen post-Avatar, i can wait...but the dude who left the first comment is pretty spot on
