Sony repositioning PlayStation 3 as all-in-one Device

Three years later and many causalities of the great "flame wars" still nursing their wounds. Sony is on record to admitting they are playing catch up being it's major competitors. Sony's new plan is to reposition it's PS3 video game console as an all-in-one entertainment device.

I am not sure that I'm a fan of this new direction, the Japanese base company has begun. Sony's new advertising campaign for the all important fall and holiday season places heavy emphasis on everything except gaming. Sony will focus more on the PS3 ability to play high-definition Blu-ray DVDs and to download movies form the internet.

After years of costing more than its competitors, Sony on September 1st finally cut the price of the PS3 to $299, putting it in line with Microsoft's Xbox 360, which has various models that cost $199 to $299, and the Nintendo Wii, which costs $249.

"A year or two ago, the idea of an all-in-one media hub was kind of a foreign idea among the mass market," Divnich noted. "Today thanks to new technologies like the iPhone, we've warmed up to the idea of products the iPhone"

According to Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We have been a game company for years and we would never walk away from that, but research confirmed there is a larger proposition under our nose," "We wanted to reposition as a total entertainment solution. We felt like we can really own entertainment."

Sony is in a great position to do great things with the PS3 especially when Moco(Motion Control) and 3D is unveil. Starting this fall Sony would have erased their biggest hurdle in many eyes with the recent price reduction. The PS3 is a great all around device that is worth every bit of $299.00. But why deviate from what made you king in the first place. If the Sony PS3 is a game system let it be that, highlighting special feature is needed but do not down play what made you great in the first place.
