Holographics coming to a PS3 near you

Sony is determined to bring 3D gaming and movies into the living rooms of the world's population.  Sony is also determine to bring Holographics to the living room.  Can anyone say "Star freaking Trek"

Holography is a technique that allows the light scattered from an object to be recorded and later reconstructed so that it appears as if the object is in the same position relative to the recording medium as it was when recorded. The image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in exactly the same way as if the object were still present, thus making the recorded image (hologram) appear three dimensional.

The technique of holography can also be used to optically store, retrieve, and process information. While it has been possible to create a 3-D holographic picture of a static object since the 1960s, it is only in the last few years that arbitrary scenes or videos can be shown on a holographic volumetric display.

According SCEE studio director Mick Hocking, "However, 3D on mobile devices, and other forms of 3D, are all possible and many companies are working on them right now. We also have techniques like holographics for the PS3 that I think will be very interesting for the future 3D games."

If you are a gamer, the possibilities of Holographics being implemented into any game only seems, way too good to be true.  Can you begin to imagine? Are we really in the future? How would you like to see this technology implemented into games? Casual or Hardcore?
