Sony's PS3 PSN Creeping From Red to Black

Microsoft's X-Box Live is a radically different experience from Sony's PSN, first off LIVE is a little more complex and filled with bright vibrant colors.  Sony's PSN is fairly simple with little flair(you can spruce things up with Dynamic Themes).  One of the biggest difference's Sony has used to it's advantage is the fact that the PSN online service is free.  While over there at Redmond, you have to pay as much as $60.00 per year for LIVE on X-box 360.

Microsoft X-box LIVE has been a very successful and profitable venture for Microsoft.  Besides making a shit storm of cash on micro-transactions they have about 40 million people forking over $50-60.00 per year to play against friends and chat.   Sony on the other hand has to pay a price for paradise.  Being that the PSN is free Sony's only source for income came from  micro-transactions and now the newly introduced PSN+($50.00 per month for exclusive beta testing, discount on games and avatars)

Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai recently spoke to Reuters Japan about the current state of the PSN, and he’s optimistic about the future of the service.

According to the report, PSN sales during the 2009 fiscal year added up to 36 billion yen (approx. $434.3 million USD). That number “nearly doubled” in 2010. However, Hirai said “we’re aiming to enter the black during the 2011 fiscal year.” Furthermore, he projected that PSN sales would reach 300 billion yen ($3.6 billion) in the 2012 fiscal year. He cited the number of registered PSN accounts (60 million as of November) as evidence of the service’s growth.

50 plus 3D titles being develop for PS3 and SCEE is working on 20

So the cat is out the bag, Sony's secret weapon in the war for our living rooms resides in the stealth 3D firmware update Sony dropped over the summer.

SCEE's studio director Mick Hocking told Develop-online "Okay, well I can say that overall we have more than fifty titles currently being converted into 3D, and this number if growing fast. I can tell you, games are leading the way when it comes to the driving the whole 3D revolution."

And when ask: Do you have internal projections on how many developers are going to embrace 3D? "Well I’ve got a list right here, and as I said we’ve got more than 20 games internally, and more than that external."

From Mr. Hocking's statement, it looks like Sony has 20 3D exclusives up their sleeves.  Can you begin to guess what they are?  Besides; Killzone 3, Uncharted 3-D(yeah you heard it first here at NanoGeekTech) , Syphon Filter(you heard that hear first too) and Resistance 3-D.

Holographics coming to a PS3 near you

Sony is determined to bring 3D gaming and movies into the living rooms of the world's population.  Sony is also determine to bring Holographics to the living room.  Can anyone say "Star freaking Trek"

Holography is a technique that allows the light scattered from an object to be recorded and later reconstructed so that it appears as if the object is in the same position relative to the recording medium as it was when recorded. The image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in exactly the same way as if the object were still present, thus making the recorded image (hologram) appear three dimensional.

The technique of holography can also be used to optically store, retrieve, and process information. While it has been possible to create a 3-D holographic picture of a static object since the 1960s, it is only in the last few years that arbitrary scenes or videos can be shown on a holographic volumetric display.

According SCEE studio director Mick Hocking, "However, 3D on mobile devices, and other forms of 3D, are all possible and many companies are working on them right now. We also have techniques like holographics for the PS3 that I think will be very interesting for the future 3D games."

If you are a gamer, the possibilities of Holographics being implemented into any game only seems, way too good to be true.  Can you begin to imagine? Are we really in the future? How would you like to see this technology implemented into games? Casual or Hardcore?

3D love, hate or could care less, it's here to Stay

At this recent CES 2010 we saw an resurgence of 3D, an old technology taking shape in the 21th century. Toshiba a Japanese base company, is using a futuristic approach to bring 3D Technology into our homes with Toshiba's Cell 3D HD Displays. And yes, it's the same "Cell processor" that power's Sony's PS3. 3D technology has come a long way, NanoGeekTech has covered the climb of True HD 3D and most importantly Sony's influence on this new exciting take on an old technology.

3D is a very important and natural progression of technology. The entertainment industry could be saved by 3D's resurgence with Avatar making a "Making Titantic Splash" proving there is "hope" , the medical profession will be able to benefit tremendously. Can you imagine in the near future doctor's having the ability to perform a pre-surgery using a real time 3D High Definition imagine of the patience using a motion control interface. Game Developers can hop on the Stereophonic HD 3D bandwagon, Simon Benson Sony Europe's senior development manager states on GameIndustry.biz "In the same way, when we're making 3D models for games, making a building or something... our artists need to spin it around, manipulate it on-screen to know how to build it properly. When you've got stereoscopic vision, that becomes far easier - you just see it before you. You can see how big something is relative to something else. It's not a little thing really close, or a big thing far away. I can understand where it is spatially because I can perceive that with stereoscopic vision. It helps the creation process." There may be some side effects associated with True HD 3D images, a small minority are complaining about headaches.
